The Importance of Colors of Underground Utility Lines

Underground utilities can easily be identified today. The risk was high before when people could not easily identify the type of utility lines underneath whenever they dig. There is reduced risks today because of new methods of identifying utility lines although not a complete reduction. In order to prevent harm, it is important to know or identify these utility lines if your need to dig the ground. If you need to dig through a piece of land today, you are required by the OSHA to first identify or locate underground utilities. You dont want something disastrous to occur. If you hit any of the underground utility lines while digging then you can be fatally injured. It can also interrupt services in your area where the line is located. Before digging their property, people should call 811 to call the utility companies so that these incidents are prevented. When the number is called, you can let the utility companies come out and mark their respective lines.

Marking lines may lessen the risks but there are time when accidents still happen. Utility lines are struck every 6 minutes, some place. When this happens, it affects traffic lights, wastewater pipes, telecommunication lines and more. This is then something that affects public health and safety.

There are certain colors that mark different utility lines for easy identification. The colors below indicate the kind of utility uses it.

Proposed excavation sites use white lines. You can mark areas with white lines that will soon be excavated.

If you see pink lines, they are temporary survey markings. Legal property boundaries are marked off by these pink lines.

Electric power lines, cable, conduit, and lighting cable use red lines. This color is appropriate for electrical works since it is associated with fire and danger.

Yellow lines are used for gas, oil, steam, petroleum, and gaseous materials. Bright yellow is an appropriate warning color since it is very disastrous to have a natural gas leak.

If you see orange lines, then you should associate this with communication., alarm, signal lines, cable or conduit. Blue lines are used for potable water. If you see purple lines, that this is for reclaimed water, irrigation and slurry lines. Sewer and drain lines use the color green. You can derail any project for a long time if you hit these lines.
